I saw Morrissey last night at Hammerstein. This is supposedly his "Greatest Hits" tour but I think I saw him on the cheap tickets night because he was pretty conservative in that department. Lots of album cuts from like Maladjusted and Vauxhall And I that I was kind of Shrug Knight about, but there are several highlights:
1. I saw a 100% authentic gay Puerto Rican rockabilly fan (who was losing his mind, screaming like a queen, and turned around while fist-pumping/lyrics shouting to prove to everyone behind him how much more than they he loves Morrissey)
2. There is a guy whose job literally is to hide in the rafters and follow Morrissey with a blinding spotlight at all times. Here he is in a rare downtime moment between songs, in the second pic he is totally going "phew!":
It's hard work functioning as the physical manifestation of Morrissey's vanity!
3. Boz Boorer stepping up to the plate and playing not only incendiary guitar solos, but also skronking saxophone and cool-out clarinet solos. Takin' care of Boz-ness! Look out, the Argayde Fire, this guy ain't no bore!
4. Smiths songs played: Stop Me, Thorn In His Side, How Soon Is Now, Stretch Out & Wait, Death of a Disco Dancer(!), and Please Please Please:
5. The fact that in the middle of the above video, some guy literally yells "I LOVE YOU MORRRISSEY!!!!"
6. At the end of the show, after Morrissey threw his shirt into the crowd, it was snatched up by the king of Northern New Jersey, who got into a tug of war with the king of Southern New Jersey, who also wanted it. "Get the fuck off!!!"
One giant lowlight:
1. With the possible exception of that time when I was in a bathroom hearing someone take a shit, opening act Kristeen Young is the shittiest thing I've ever heard.
Apparently she's half-Apache, half-German and the adopted daughter of Christian fundamentalist parents. In my opinion, she's half-Crapache, half-germy and the adopted daughter of Craptian fundacrapalist crapents. Y'know what I'm sayin!!!
